Andrea Assaf
M.A. '99
Andrea Assaf is the founding Artistic Director of Art2Action Inc. She is a performer, writer, director, and cultural organizer. Andrea currently serves as the National Coordinator for the National Institute for Directing & Ensemble Creation (an Art2Action and Pangea World Theater partnership), and is an Artist-in-Residence at the University of South Florida (USF) School of Theatre and Dance. Her original work, Eleven Reflections on September, has toured to Oregon Shakespeare Festival, the Kennedy Center Millennium Stage, The Apollo, La MaMa and more. Other original works include Outside The Circle, co-authored with Samuel Valdez, and Fronteras Desviadas/Deviant Borders with Mujeres en Ritual Danza Teatro. Directing credits include Speed Killed My Cousin by The Carpetbag Theatre, breaking letters by Suheir Hammad, and more.
Awards include: 2014 & 2010 Princess Grace Awards, 2011 NPN Creation Fund, 2007 Hedgebrook Residency for women authoring change, and 2004 Cultural Contact with Mujeres en Ritual Danza-Teatro.
Andrea has a Masters degree in Performance Studies and a BFA in Acting, both from NYU. Former positions include Artistic Director of New WORLD Theatre (2004-09), and Program Associate for Animating Democracy (2001-04). Andrea is also a published poet, and author of numerous articles and publications on arts and culture. She currently serves on the Board of the Consortium of Asian American Theatres & Artists (CAATA), and Alternate ROOTS. Andrea is a member of RAWI, the Radius of Arab American Writers, and Women Playwrights International.
