MIDWESTERN GOTHIC, a new musical written by Graduate Musical Theatre Writing Program alum Royce Vavrek (Cycle 16) with collaborator Josh Schmidt, was recently filmed and presented by the Royal Academy of Music in London.
The show follows a queer teenage boy who locks himself in the bathroom and dives into a dream. Struggling to come to terms with his identity, he escapes into a fantasy world: an isolated farmhouse in the decaying Midwest. There he becomes Stina, a young woman desperate to express herself through dangerous designs on her step-dad – and anyone else who gets in her way. Will Stina’s plans result in a bloody bathtub burlesque for the ages or will repression and shame drown them all?
