MY LORD, WHAT A NIGHT by Deborah Brevoort

MY LORD, WHAT  NIGHT by GMTWP faculty member Deborah Brevoort opened at the Contemporary American Theatre Festival on July 5th, as part of its NNPN (National New Play Network) Rolling World Premiere. 

The Contemporary American Theatre Festival produces the newest plays in America, in the oldest town in West Virginia. Discover the ultimate theatre experience in historic Shepherdstown. Named as one of the top theater festivals in the world, by publications such as The New York Times, American Theatre and World Guide, the Contemporary American Theater Festival shapes the future of the American theater.  Each summer the Festival produces six new plays in rotating repertory.

Inspired by actual events, MY LORD, WHAT A NIGHT is a full-length play that explores the struggles faced by two icons of the 20th century who dealt with the injustices of Jim Crow and the rise of anti-Semitism during a highly divided era in American history. 

Deborah Brevoort is the author of numerous plays, musicals, and operas, including THE WOMEN OF LOCKERBIE, which is produced all over the world. Her other plays include THE POETRY OF PIZZA, THE COMFORT TEAM, THE BLUE-SKY BOYS, THE VELVET WEAPON, & BLUE MOON OVER MEMPHIS which have been produced at Virginia Stage, Purple Rose, Barter Theatre, Capital Rep, Mixed Blood, Theatre Nohgaku and others. Her work is published by DPS, Samuel French, Applause Books, and No Passport Press. She is a two-time winner of the Frederick Loewe Award in musical theatre for KING ISLAND CHRISTMAS with David Friedman and COYOTE GOES SALMON FISHING with Scott Richards and a three-time winner of the Frontiers Competition at Ft. Worth Opera for EMBEDDED and ALBERT NOBBS with Patrick Soluri, and STEAL A PENCIL FOR ME with Gerald Cohen. Her latest opera, MURASAKI'S MOON, with composer Michi Wiancko, was commissioned and produced by On Site Opera and NYC's Metropolitan Museum of Art. Deborah is an artistic mentor to the NBO musical theatre initiative in Nairobi, Kenya and an alumnus of New Dramatists.
