THE GOOD SWIMMER, by GMTWP Alum and Adjunct Faculty Member Donna DiNovelli and Heidi Rodewald

GMTWP Alum and Adjunct Faculty Member Donna DiNovelli (Cycle 7) had the world premiere of her new musical THE GOOD SWIMMER which was included in the 2018 Next Wave Festival at The Brooklyn Academy of Music (BAM) this past fall. Co-written with composer Heidi Rodewald (PASSING STRANGE).

THE GOOD SWIMMER, an aqueous haze of digital, neon-splashed water, follows a young beach lifeguard who grapples with the legacy of the one she could not save: her brother who died in Vietnam. Representing the cohort of youth that was drafted to the war, a chorus of lifeguards—comprising the diverse alumni of the Chicago Children’s Choir— perform harmonies with a band led by singer David Driver against an evocative video backdrop, ultimately finding catharsis in a galvanizing truth: that we honor our fallen soldiers only when we defy the political drumbeat of senseless war.
