When the Golden Globes announced their nominations, Chloe Zhao immediately made history, becoming the first female director of Asian descent to receive a Best Director nomination.

Zhao’s Nomadland, which has quickly become an awards season front-runner, received four total nominations from the Hollywood Foreign Press, including best Drama Motion Picture, Best Screenplay of a Motion Picture, Best Actress in a Drama Motion Picture (Frances McDormand), and the aforementioned Best Director nomination.

The success of Zhao’s western feature has been steady and groundbreaking since simultaneously debuting at the Toronto Film Festival and the Venice Film Festival, where it won the Golden Lion. Prominent sources known for awards predictions, such as Variety and Vulture, have all put “Nomadland” on the Oscar-bound track.

The Golden Globes will take place on Feb. 28, 2021.
