Alum Dee Rees’ Pariah will be the first film by a queer woman of color on the Criterion Collection, a platform considered the ultimate film canon by many cinephiles.
Pariah is Rees' first feature film, which tells the story of Alike, a 17-year-old Black Brooklyn teenager juggling conflicting identities and risking friendship, heartbreak, and family in a desperate search for sexual expression. The film put Rees in the spotlight, winning the John Cassavetes Award at the Film Independent Spirit Awards and the Freedom of Expression Award from the National Board of Review. Out calls it “a beautiful look into the lives of young queer Black women, one of the best you’ll ever see.”
Pariah will join the Criterion Collection on June 29.
