Grad Film: The Black Family Feature Film Prize

Tuesday, May 14, 2019

The NYU Tisch School of the Arts is pleased to announce the establishment of the annual Black Family Film Prize, made possible by the generosity and vision of the Debra and Leon Black Family Foundation.

The Black Family Film Prize will be awarded annually to students in the Graduate Film program of the Maurice Kanbar Institute of Film and TV at NYU Tisch whose film projects exemplify innovation in story, style, and tone. The Foundation’s goal is to push the conversation of filmmaking forward and reward those filmmakers who can prove they have the vision and ability to do so.

“The Black family saw a need in our community and have so generously stepped in to help. We’re incredibly grateful that the Black Family Film Prize is available now to support this generation of filmmakers at NYU Tisch, and we’re thankful for the long-term investment the family is making in the next generation,” Allyson Green, dean of the NYU Tisch School of the Arts, said.

“In supporting this fund, our family envisions the Prize to be awarded to filmmakers who are willing to push past conventional trends, take risks, and break boundaries. Knowing how capable and talented Graduate Film students are, we know that awardees will step up to this challenge. I’m so grateful for the education and values I received while in the program and my family and I couldn’t be happier to help support a new generation of exciting filmmakers,” Alexander Black ’17 (MFA, Kanbar Institute, Grad Film), said.
