Happy Lunar New Year! The Lunar New Year, also known as the Spring Festival, kicks off on Wednesday, January 29, 2025, and we're thrilled to celebrate the Year of the Wood Snake! From East Asia to Southeast Asia to vibrant diaspora communities across the United States, millions gather to celebrate with their own unique customs and traditions, particularly in countries like China, Vietnam, Korea, Singapore, Malaysia, Thailand, Indonesia, and the Philippines.
In Chinese astrology, the Wood Snake represents intuition, logic, and adaptability– qualities reflected in its calm demeanor and creative spirit. - Think!Chinatown | In Our Corner & Lunar New Year 2025
- In addition to Think!Chinatown’s Lunar New Year 2025 programming, they are exhibiting In Our Corner: Exchanges in the Asian American Art Movements and Beyond, an art exhibition exploring the personal and professional support that artists of Asian descent received during and after the Asian American Art Movements. This companion exhibition to Legacies: Asian American Art Movements in New York City (1969-2001) at New York University’s 80WSE Gallery, invites five artists of the three key art collectives and organizations featured in Legacies to show alongside five non-Asian American artists who supported their work and growth over the years.
- Abrons Arts Center + the W.O.W Project | From Chinatown, With Love 2025
- From Chinatown, With Love (FCWL) is an annual mutual aid program in partnership with the W.O.W. Project and Abrons Arts Center and in collaboration with lucky risograph and Midnight Project. By reimagining traditions like red envelope giveaways, FCWL brings together Asian American artists and Chinatown small businesses to combat gentrification and economic challenges through art and community engagement. In addition to FCWL, the W.O.W Project has programmed various Lunar New Year celebrations.
- The Met Museum | Celebrating the Year of the Snake
- This Met exhibition runs from January 29th to February 10th and is on display through February 10, 2025 and presents various works that illustrate the significance of the snake in Chinese culture, including a 3,000-year-old bronze ritual vessel with a spout formed by joined snakes’ heads, a 13th-century pottery figure of a mischievously smiling snake, and an 18th-century exquisitely painted porcelain cup portraying a scene from the “Legend of the White Snake,” a popular folktale of love and romance between humans and fantastic creatures.
