Produced by Open Arts in partnership with the Tisch Initiative for Creative Research, the Department of Drama, Graduate Musical Theater Writing, and the Department of Dance. Tisch will host fourth graders from New York City Elementary School PS3 in a day of movement-based workshops and collaborations exploring what it means to create community.

An event dedicated to international initiatives led by Cinema Studies graduate students. Students will give presentations and answer questions about their involvement in student-led missions including the MIAP Audiovisual Preservation Exchange (APEX), Encrucijadas: Dialogues for Latin American Cinema, and NYU global exchange fellowships. International exchange will be discussed in diverse geographical and cultural contexts, including: Latin America (Montevideo, Buenos Aires, and more), Paris, London and Berlin.

Day of Community at the Department of Drama

Department-Wide Event

Students will create a community wall in the Lobby at the Department of Drama. While at their studios, they will write reflections on, and definitions of, community on post-it-notes. These will be assembled to create the community wall. We will then videotape students before the wall, offering their own reflections on community or reading specific notes. The notes will be collected and distributed to new students during orientation week next year.

Theatrical Production Day of Community Event

Lydia Witt will present the movie she shot this summer documenting the work of the humanitarian organization Medici Per I Diritti Umani. Lydia is getting her Masters in International Education and spent the summer collecting interviews with refugees in Rome. The short film details one part of that experience. We will have time for a short introduction, the movie, and a Q&A. As part of her research this summer, Lydia met several asylum seekers from Gambia who are tailors! We'd like to take this opportunity to share their story and begin a process of supporting their craftsmanship directly. Feel free to bring your lunch.

October 2nd is a day set aside for all of Tisch to reflect upon what it means to be a “citizen artist.” Here at DDW, we’re going to ask ourselves hard questions about what we write when it comes to identity, how we approach identity, and what we do with historical work that is inherently and irreducibly offensive. A panel (including Shinho Lee, Sabrina Dhawan, Richard Wesley, Kristoffer Diaz, and Terry Curtis Fox) will be held where we will ask hard questions. The impolite questions that need to be voiced and discussed with respect.

Sara Hendren is an artist, design researcher, and professor based in Cambridge, Massachusetts. She makes material art and design works, writes, and lectures on adaptive and assistive technologies, prosthetics, inclusive design, accessible architecture, and related ideas. Her work has been exhibited in the US and abroad and is held in the permanent collection at MOMA (NYC), and her writing and design work have appeared in the Boston Globe, The Atlantic Tech, FastCo Design, and on National Public Radio (US), among others. She teaches socially-engaged design practices, adaptive and assistive technology design, and disability studies for engineers-in-training in her role as assistant professor at Olin College. She writes and edits Abler.

Governor Andrew Cuomo will be speaking at NYU on the significance of climate change, climate action and climate-related policy in New York. EarthMatters@NYU, the largest and oldest student environmental club on campus, is partnering with the organization Know Tomorrow in hosting the event. The evening will consist of a welcoming address by Waterkeeper Alliance Director Mark Yaggi, a keynote speech by Governor Cuomo, and a panel discussion of student leaders involved in environmental initiatives and organizations at NYU.

Game: Killer Queen

Five v Five Fridays is a casual tournament for the New York City Killer Queen community that meets every week at the NYU Game Center in Brooklyn. Played on a massive ten person arcade cabinet, Killer Queen is a team game of strategy and skill where a deadly, flying Queen and her four drones try to protect their hive by collecting berries, eliminating the opposing hive's Queen, or riding the obstinate snail to glorious victory. The game is on freeplay starting at 6PM and the tournament starts at 7:30PM. Everyone gets help finding a team if they want to play and spectators are always welcome!

ITP hosts documentary photographer and 1992 MacArthur Genius Award winner, Susan Meiselas, for a conversation about the challenges and opportunities of living in a hyper-digital, multi-platform world. Meislas proposes creating a working group of students whose purpose is to use this perspective and apply it to, and consider new strategies for, the digital author and engaged participants.
