Brooke Berman

Brooke Berman is an award-winning playwright, filmmaker and memoirist. Her indie feature (and directorial debut) Ramona At Midlife premiered at Geena Davis’s esteemed Bentonville Film Festival and is currently streaming.

Brooke's plays have been produced and developed across the US at theaters including Steppenwolf, Soho Rep, Williamstown Theater Festival, Naked Angels, MCC, Primary Stages, The Humana Festival, and The Bay Area Playwrights Foundation. Internationally, her work has been developed at The Royal Court Theatre, The National Theatre Studio and Pentabus and produced at Red Stitch Theatre in Australia. Her play Hunting and Gathering was named to the Best of 2008 by New York Magazine. Most recently she developed A Model City with Leigh Silverman for Stacey Mindich Productions.

Brooke has a has written films for Natalie Portman, The Mark Gordon Company, Vox Films, Fugitive Films and Red Crown. She adapted and directed the short U4G which premiered at the Aspen International ShortsFest where it won Audience Special Recognition. ALL SAINTS DAY, a short film Brooke wrote, directed by Will Frears, won Best Narrative Short at the Savannah Film Festival and played at the Tribeca Film Festival. Brooke’s feature POLLY FREED was chosen to be part of New York Stage and Film’s Screenwriters Lab where it was mentored by Kyra Sedgewick, Zach Helm and Billy Goldberg and selected as part of the MOME (Mayor’s Office of NYC) inaugural finance lab for female filmmakers. PF won Best Screenplay at the Toronto Independent Film Festival in 2020.

Brooke’s memoir No Place Like Home is now available on Audible. Her plays, including Hunting and Gathering, Smashing and A Model City, have been produced across the US and internationally at theaters including Steppenwolf, Primary Stages, 2nd Stage and developed at The O'Neill, The National Theatre Studio in London, Williamstown Theater Festival, Naked Angels and others. After writing extensively about couch-surfing and barely-legal sublets, Brooke now owns a coop in Queens, where she lives with her husband and son.
