Get to know our school better and explore all the colorful and creative corners of Tisch School of the Arts! Win a prize by participating in Tisch Pic or Treat, a selfie scavenger hunt around remarkable locations at 721 Broadway, 111 Second Ave, the Paulson Center in Manhattan and 370 Jay in Brooklyn. Along your way, learn fun facts about Tisch and pick up candy from the departments.  The first 10 people to submit selfies of themselves at all the designated locations will win a prize.

WHEN: Tisch Pic or Treat begins on Friday, October 27th at 8:00am and ends on October 31st at 5:00pm.

WHERE: All around Tisch!

WHAT TO BRING: A fully charged digital device to take selfies and your NYU ID.

HOW TO PLAY:

  1. Visit all the designated Tisch locations - list of locations will go live on this page at 8am on October 27th. They will lead you to a variety Tisch spaces spread across multiple floors in multiple buildings on the Washington Square Campus to the Brooklyn Campus and back.
  2. Take a selfie in the specified area of the Tisch location. Be sure to read the directions for what the picture should include. Suggested, but not required: fun poses!
  3. Submit your/your team’s selfies and information HERE. The first 10 to submit the completed Tisch Pic or Treat challenge will win a prize.

FAQ

Can we play as a team? 
Yes, up to 3 people can submit as one team. If you are one of the first 10 Tisch Pic or Treater winners, each team member will receive a prize. BE SURE TO INCLUDE ALL TEAM MEMBERS IN THE SELFIES!

Do the pictures need to be in any specific order?
No. The order you visit the locations in is fully up to you. Be strategic!

1. SELFIE MUST INCLUDE YOU/YOUR TEAM AND...The Sixth Sense movie poster

LOCATION: 721 Broadway Hint: Film & TV is located on the 9th, 10th and 11th Floor in 721 Broadway

FUN FACT! The Sixth Sense was written and directed by esteemed alum M. Night Shyamalan.

Shyamalan made his first film, the semi-autobiographical drama Praying with Anger, while still an NYU student, using money borrowed from family and friends.

Night graduated in 1992 from UGFTV and he spoke at the NYU Presidents Welcome in 2014 but has not spoken at Salute.

Night's daughter, Ishana, is also a UGFTV alum, graduating in 2021. Her first film THE WATCHERS is expected to premiere in 2024. M. Night is a producer on the film.

2. SELFIE MUST INCLUDE YOU/YOUR TEAM AND...The African Grove Theatre sign

LOCATION: The Paulson Center Hint: You can best access this from the entrance on 38 W. Houston Street and Greene St. (SW corner) and take the elevators or stairs to the fourth floor.

FUN FACT!  The African Grove Theatre—built on the footprint of the original— is inhabited by NYU Tisch School of the Arts’ acclaimed Graduate Acting and Design for Stage and Film programs. The space will offer ongoing theatrical performance, historical displays, educational programming, and teaching and learning opportunities to promote the groundbreaking legacy of the original African Grove Theatre as a beacon for Black artists and performers.

Widely considered the first Black theater in the country, the African Grove Theatre got its start when William Alexander Brown, a retired steamship steward, started hosting poetry readings, musical performances, and short plays for Black New Yorkers in his backyard at 38 Thomas Street in 1816.

LOCATION: 111 Second Ave

FUN FACT! In recognition of the ongoing support provided by the family of actor, director, comedian, writer, and Tisch alumnus Billy Crystal, Tisch Dean Allyson Green officially renamed its theater at 111 Second Avenue the “Jack Crystal Theater,” in memory of Crystal’s father, jazz impresario Jack Crystal.

From 1949 to 1963,  Jack Crystal, manager of the famed Commodore Music Shop and Commodore Records executive, held legendary jazz concerts known as “The Sessions” at 111 Second Avenue.

LOCATION: Jay Street - Outside the Clive Davis Gallery @ 370 Jay

FUN FACT! The Clive Davis Gallery is dedicated to the legendary magnate of the music industry and very respected philanthropist, Clive Davis.  

On the gallery's lower level you will find the permanent exhibition which includes ephemera from Mr. Davis' iconic career as well as displays on some of  the legendary artists whose careers he helped to nurture.  The upper gallery will host temporary exhibitions from faculty, students and community partners that reflect the spirit of 370 Jay Street as a place where art and technology meet.

6. SELFIE MUST INCLUDE YOU/YOUR TEAM AND...The Iris Cantor Theatre Orchestra sign

LOCATION: Paulson Center Hint: You can best access this from the entrance on 38 W. Houston Street and Greene St. (SW corner).

FUN FACT! The Iris Cantor Theatre (the ICT) is the home of NYU's Tisch School of the Arts Department of Drama and Steinhardt School of Culture, Education & Human Development Department of Music and Performing Arts Professions. Both departments present fully realized mainstage productions and the theater serves as a training ground for students seeking a career in the performing arts industry. The ICT is the first NYU professional proscenium theater with full technical amenities such as sound, projection, lighting, fly rail system, and automatic staging. Seating capacity is approximately 350 seats in a raked continental theater seating configuration throughout three levels.

The first Tisch Drama production in the Iris Cantor Theatre will be Rent by Jonathan Larson, directed by Orion S. Johnstone from April 26-May 4, 2024.

Dedicated to NYU’s Tisch School of the Arts, the Iris Cantor Theatre is the university’s first professional-level proscenium theater – a space where talented students can rehearse and put on world-class performances.

LOCATION: 721 Broadway Hint: Use the south elevators in the 721 lobby to access the Collaborative Arts space on the 4th Floor.

FUN FACT! Collaborative Arts is an innovative new Bachelor of Fine Arts degree at NYU's Tisch School of the Arts where students get hands-on training in a wide variety of artistic disciplines. Our students acquire foundational knowledge and develop their skills in the areas represented by Tisch’s three divisions: the Institute of Performing Arts, Emerging Media, and the Kanbar Center for Film & Television.

FUN FACT! While you’re on the Graduate Musical Theatre Writing floor, check out their decorations for the TISCH HALLOWEEN ADVENTURE! This cross-departmental event runs from October 26–October 31, 2023.

LOCATION: 721 Broadway Hint: Performance Studies shares the 6th Floor of 721 with the Martin Scorsese Department of Cinema Studies.

FUN FACT! Performance Studies shares the 6th Floor of 721 Broadway with the Martin Scorsese Department of Cinema Studies. Both departments, along with Art & Public Policy make up Tisch’s Center for Research & Study. The Center for Research and Study gathers the three scholarly departments at Tisch School of the Arts whose main focus lies on the creation of theory, historical research, and critical and social analysis in areas relevant to art-making.

FUN FACT! In recognition of its outstanding contribution to education and the arts, New York Mayor, Edward I. Koch, proclaimed October 15, 1985 to be “THE TISCH SCHOOL OF THE ARTS DAY”
