When: Friday, Oct 16 @ 4PM
Where: TBD

Learn Fornésian playwriting techniques with playwright Migdalia Cruz, one of Fornés’s preeminent students. Please note capacity is limited and RSVP does not guarantee admission.

Migdalia Cruz, a Bronx-born theater-maker and educator, is the 2026 DGF Lifetime Achievement Award winner, 2025 Re-Focus/Roundabout resident, and the 2023 DGF Legacy artist. Her credits include over 60 works, across 12 countries, in 150 venues, such as the National Theatre of Greece, Houston Grand Opera, BAM, and the Goodman. Her awards include two NEAs, a McKnight, and the 2013 Helen Merrill Distinguished Playwright. Cruz's mentor, María Irene Fornés, at INTAR and her residency at Latino Chicago Theater Company nurtured her voice. She co-chairs the DGF Playwriting Fellows, mentors the Latinx Playwrights’ Circle, and has taught at many universities and theaters including Princeton, NYU, Brava, SMU, and with the Fornés Institute. Migdalia is an alumna of New Dramatists, and a member of The Tent. In 2026, her Macbeth will have been produced at the Magic Theatre, Shakespeare By The Sea, James Madison University, and Connecticut College. Along with her translation of Richard III, it was turned into a podcast by Next Chapter/PlayOn Podcasts.  Among Cruz’s touchstone plays: Miriam’s Flowers, FUR, Lolita de Lares, SALT, Lucy Loves Me, Never Moscow, and El Grito Del Bronx. Her work was featured in several books including: Fifty Key Figures in Latinx and Latin American Theatre from Routledge and Fornés In Context from Cambridge University Press. Her newest anthology, The Impossible Plays of Migdalia Cruz, was published in 2024 by Tripwire Harlot Press. She is on Honor Roll’s inaugural 2026 list of “50 Plays by Women 50+,” and was commissioned by the Susan Smith Blackburn Prize with the Flynn Center for the Arts to write a play about democracy to be presented along with the plays of several other Blackburn Prize finalists and winners in October 2026 at the Flynn in VT.
