What Courses Are Offered in Madrid? Is there mandatory coursework?

Performance Studies majors and minors can choose courses offered by Performance Studies, the Core General Education Curriculum, and minor or double major departments while satisfying a portion of the foreign language requirement (Spanish language course). Students can also opt to explore elective coursework. All courses will count toward your degree. All PS Majors and Minors are required to take "Performance of the City: Madrid" - a Core Performance Studies major requirement course - as well as a Spanish language course (to satisfy a portion of the language requirement) for graded credit. These courses cannot be taken Pass/Fail. Students can also enroll in courses to satisfy Core General Education Requirements (i.e. the "Societies and Social Science" or "Expressive Cultures" requirements), which must also be taken for graded credit and cannot be taken Pass/Fail. If students are enrolling in a course to satisfy minor or double major requirements, these courses too must be taken for graded credit. Students should consult with their minor/double major advisor ahead of registration. Students must earn a grade of "C" or better for major/minor credit or a grade of "D" or better for Core General Education or elective credit.  Only elective courses may be taken for Pass/Fail credit.

When Should I Go?

PS majors and minors are encouraged to study in Madrid during the Fall semester of their sophomore year. However, given the flexibility of the Performance Studies major/minor, students may opt to study in Madrid the fall semester of their junior/senior year. Majors/minors should speak with their academic advisor to discuss their academic trajectory.

How & When Do I Apply?

Applications for Fall study away are due by February 15th. You should submit your electronic application on or before the admissions deadline. Applications received after the deadline are reviewed for admissions as space remains available. All students interested in applying to study at an NYU Global Academic Center must complete the online application which includes an agreement to the NYU Study Away Standard. All applicants are required to include three different choices of locations for study and every attempt will be made to match students with one of their top locations. For instructors on how to submit your application, please proceed to the Madrid Global Site here

What Is The Application Process Like?

The application review is a holistic process that considers the complete academic record, unique program requirements, and student essay. It is suggested that applicants have earned a GPA of 3.0; students with lower GPA's are encouraged to provide insight to their academic goals in the personal statement. Please be aware that admission to any of the NYU Global study away sites is contingent upon the applicant's continued academic success and a review of their University records.

What Factors Determine Eligibility?

Students must be registered as a full time student and have completed freshman year of study (two full semesters) and will be 18 or older prior to beginning of term away. Incomplete (I) grades on transcript must be resolved before an admissions decision can be made. Students currently on leave of absence, academic probation or disciplinary probation are generally ineligible; exceptions will be made on a case-by-case basis.

Do I Need A Passport?

Yes! If your passport has expired, or you are a US citizen who has never before applied for a passport, you must get a new one before you travel internationally. For more passport help, read more here.
