"Discipline and Punish" by Michel Foucault

Foucault's analysis of the embodied character of state power and the performativity of delinquency explains *everything*.

"This, then, is how one must imagine the punitive city...The great terrifying ritual of the public execution gives way, day after day, street after street, to this serious theatre, with its multifarious and persuasive scenes." (113)

He's not just talking about the prison system -- though it explains SO MUCH about that institution! D&P maps the continuum between discipline (as punishment) and disciplinarity (as institutionalized structures of knowledge), and locates and implicates us along it.
