Alexis Ashe is an artist and writer. She has explored various media in her artistic endeavors, and currently focuses on painting, collage, creative writing, and related visual arts. Her art work tells a story, weaving the traditional and iconic with the dark and sinister to form a surreal and fantastical dream. Her works often feature BDSM imagery, expressions of altered reality, and occult symbols alongside comforting, familiar items or brands. Her art draws on her love for various music subcultures, including punk, glam rock, new wave and goth. Her paintings are a visual expression of these genres and an homage to her love for them. Alexis’s written pieces, based on her personal experiences, create an alternate world, weaving in ideas of dreams, mysticism and beauty resulting in glamorous, dramatic and evocative pieces. For Alexis, engaging with her creativity takes on the role of a spiritual experience. As a native New Yorker, she graduated from Professional Children’s School in 2021. Alexis’s creative writing works are featured in the archives of Southern Methodist University, where she studied in 2022. Her written and visual works were also featured in the 2023 Performance Studies Undergraduate Student Work Exhibition.

Why PS @ NYU?

All artistic fields involve a level of performance, and this idea resonates with me. In my artistic endeavors, I create a vessel to connect with the audience, offering parts of myself and my own psyche for them to relate and spiritually respond to. My work is often inspired by multiple media forms. For example, a song may inspire a painting. An art movement may inspire a collage. Each of my works transforms into its own performance.
