Erica Gold, Rutgers University Institute of Jazz Studies, Spring 2015, IMLS

Since I began my internship at IJS, I have learned to think quickly and be prepared with manageable solutions to issues. During my time at IJS, it was decided that my main focus would be IJS’s film collection. IJS’s collection encompasses two hundred and thirty-nine unaccessioned films and fifteen cataloged films for a total of two hundred and fifty-four films. After cleaning the area where the moving image collection lived and alphabetizing the collection, each unaccessioned item was given a temporary identification number and inspected, cleaned, described and rehoused in a more stable environment. I have learned to do careful research on the collection and develop a keen understanding of its needs and address them in a manner that will benefit the physical stability of the films as well as meet the long-term goals that IJS has for the future of their collection.
