I worked with Los Herederos this spring to conduct a review on their collection called the Urban Condors Collection. The Urban Condors Collection consists of audiovisual materials on a variety of formats; the content includes anything related to the Andean music scene in New York City. Major projects I conducted included researching suitable collection management systems for the collection, updating the inventory with new acquisitions, and creating a new collection assessment that served as an updated assessment for the collection.
What I learned from this experience is that there are multiple ways of playing back formats like MiniDV. I also learned very quickly how to create a collection assessment. I also learned that software tools such as MediaInfo will be essential and beneficial throughout my career. What I recognize as well is that organizations like Los Herederos and collections like the Urban Condors Collection need a different type of preservation and care compared to other collections. Before, I believed that there were only a few ways to preserve a collection; but after this internship, I found that there are a variety of approaches to preserve a collection.
