Becca Bender, Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts, Spring 2017, NEH

My primary project at the Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts archive was to work with their long-neglected 35mm and 16mm film collection. This involved assessing the overall physical condition of the collection, starting the process to quarantine reels suffering from vinegar syndrome, and working to increase intellectual control over the elements. I also put together a rewind bench, so the collection can now be inspected in-house. A secondary task was to work with the production team of "Live From Lincoln Center" to document previous digitization efforts and to strategize about long-term digital preservation of legacy and current footage. Additionally, an unexpected discovery at the archive led to a project to find a more appropriate home for an early 20th century home movie collection created by a prominent musical family. Among that collection was an historically significant reel of nitrate film, so I'm also working on a plan for the preservation and proper storage of that reel.
