The Department of Art & Public Policy Supports The Public Theater

Monday, Jun 26, 2017

There’s been a lot of noise in response to Shakespeare in the Park’s current production of “Julius Caesar,” directed by our colleague, Professor Oskar Eustis, Artistic Director of the Public Theater, in which Caesar is portrayed to resemble the current President of the U.S.

We support the work and the right of an artist or company to interpret theater or any art form. One of the marks of strong and lasting art is that it opens itself to many readings, and if evoking the universal, may adapt and infuse meaning to a particular reality in a particular time or place.  Professor Eustis pointed, in a conversation with The New York Times, to the underlying questions arising, of “freedom of the art, freedom of speech, the ability to do provocative work, the ability to do work that speaks to the real issues and anxiety of our time…”

Art, at its best, uncovers, rattles, moves, surprises, disturbs, caresses, addresses, taunts, humors, inspires us to see, understand and question more deeply, newly.

Oskar Eustis models integrity, vision and tenacity for us all.

We are proud to be associated with him.
