DPI Chair Dr. Deborah Wilis recently participated in George Washington University's exhibition Songs of my People: 25 Years Later as both artist and panelist.
The exhibition, organized by Dr. Imani M. Cheers, revisits the seminal project Songs of My People: African Americans: A Self Portrait, a colaborative book and exhibition created by thousands of African American photographers in the early 1990s.
Dr. Willis participated in a February 10 panel discussion on the lasting impact of Songs of my People. Other panelists included National Museum of Arifcan American History and Culture Rhea Combs and D. Michael Cheers — an organizer of the original Songs of My People project and father to Dr. Imani Cheers.
