DPI Alum Alice Proujansky photographs maternity care in Mexico

Monday, Jul 31, 2017

Department of Photography & Imaging alum Alice Proujansky ('02) recently traveled to Mexico to photograph midwives and maternity healthcare. The images accompany a Stat News article by Carolina Menchú, a midwife in Chiapas, Mexico.

Proujansky and Menchú collaborated on the story in order to bring visibility to the emerging trend of parto humanizado ("humanized birth") which contrasts with substandard maternity care which has historically been common in Mexico.

Proujansky's career has been centered around photographing motherhood, and she has described herself as a "working mother photographing mothers working."

The photo editor for the story was Alissa Ambrose, also a DPI Alum (class of 2006).
