DPI Alum Rin Johnson in March Madness Exhibition

Wednesday, Mar 15, 2017

The work of DPI Alum Rin Johnson (BFA '12) will be featured in the March Madness exhibition at the Fort Gansevoort Gallery, opening thursday, March 16, 2017. Johnson's body of work includes sculpture, virtual reality, and poetry.

The exhibition centers around the female perspective in sports and features the work of 31 female artists. The work draws attention to stereotypes of feminintiy and challenges masculine archetypes in athleticism by displaying the strength of women in sports.

DPI Alum Hank Willis Thomas (BFA '98) co-curated the exhibition. This is the second of two exhibitions surrounding sports culture as represented in the visual arts. This installment expands on these themes by "celebrating the postion of women as artists and citizens who are central in pushing critical issues forward."

The March Madness exhibition coincides with the national college basketball tournament of the same name, Women's History Month, and the resurgence of women as figures of social justice.
