Christine Gennetti, WNYC New York Public Radio, Summer 2018

New York Public Radio includes WNYC, WNYC Studios, WQXR, New Jersey Public Radio, and The Jerome L. Greene Performance Space. It produces public radio programs, live events, and podcasts. The NYPR Archives was founded in 2000 and houses over 70,000 audio recordings in nearly every analog and digital format except cylinder and wire. The collection also contains video, photographs, memorabilia, reports, news items, program guides, institutional records, and promotional materials. During my internship I had the unique experience of both setting up a video transfer station and managing and digitizing an unprocessed audio collection. The video project yielded a written report that encapsulated my results and recommendations. I then successfully implemented a working video transfer station, including installing the equipment and creating a digital copy of a VHS tape. Additionally, I cataloged and digitized a box of MiniDisc field recordings from a WNYC reporter created in 2005. With this project, I not only became familiar with an unusual audio format, but I improved my item assessment and inventorying skills while gaining a better understanding of the PBCore metadata schema. Working with the MiniDisc collection enabled me to implement a workflow for archival audio management, ingest, and description in a broadcast environment.
