Lorena Ramirez-Lopez, NYU Bobst Library, Summer 2015, Mellon Foundation

The New York University Archive of Contemporary Composers’ Websites collection is part of a Mellon funded project, Archiving Websites of Contemporary Composers. This project is a collaboration amongst New York University Libraries, NYU Moving Image Archiving and Preservation (MIAP) program, and Internet Archive (IA) to improve current web archiving captures of born digital content, specifically audiovisual content on websites. As the MIAP intern for the summer 2015 term, I used Internet Archive's web tool, Archive-It. Internet Archive is one of the few organizations that provides client-side services for web archives that can harvest, control, and provide storage for born digital content (websites!). I was able to conduct crawls to capture websites from over 300 contemporary composers and review and analyze using this tool. I am capable of modifying the scope accordingly due to browser updates, software upgrades, as well as keep up to date with the constant updates and uploads these composers changes on their websites. And since I became familiar with the issues and needs of my institution, I have set up workflows according to NYU’s web archiving policies and created forms to aid in the collection’s quality assurance process, which I hope can be adapted.
