From June 2 to August 9, 2013, I interned at the American School of Classical Studies at Athens (American School), working under supervision of Archivist Natalia Vogeikoff-Brogan in the Archives of both the Gennadius and Blegen Libraries. The purpose of this internship was to assist the American School in assessing its audiovisual holdings. To this end, I examined materials in video, audio, and film formats, assessed preservation issues connected to these materials, and performed basic collection management tasks.
I presented my findings to the larger American School (including its Director) at a publicized “Tea Talk” with screenings of two archival films on July 18, as well as a final report that includes the database I created. The American School is dedicated to scholarly pursuits involving all periods of Greece. Founded in 1881, it trains young scholars, sponsors and promotes archaeological fieldwork, provides resources for scholarly work, and disseminates research. Over 190 U.S. colleges and universities are its constituent members, but it serves Greek and other scholars as well. The American School is also charged by the Greek government Hellenic with primary oversight for all U.S. archaeological research in Greece, including the excavations at Corinth and the Athenian agora.
