Lorena Ramirez-Lopez, CUNY-TV, Fall 2014, NEH

I really wanted to learn more about video and digital preservation and after seeing panels and hearing other people's great experiences, I thought, "Why not intern with Dave Rice at CUNY?" Despite being just an intern, I got to work on a lot of projects that I terrified me . I was just getting comfortable working the decks at the lab. How was I suppose to handle the decks in an environment like CUNY TV!? It's a good thing Dave believed I could do it because I was able to help preserve four collections: Open Mind, Charlando con Cervantes, Working in the Theater, and Nueva York, which was one of my favorite TV series even before starting CUNY. My experience here definitely complimented my work in class. Terminology and processes seemed a lot clearer after Dave would explain it to me. And wiring seemed simple after I worked with Flip from the IT department. I got to make my own cables and route the umatic decks. I definitely didn't think I would enjoy digital preservation as much, but I think I definitely found my niche while working here at CUNY.
