Carmel Curtis, John Jay College of Criminal Justice, Fall 2014, IMLS

Throughout my internship at the Lloyd Seeley Library in John Jay College of Criminal Justice, I identified all audiovisual materials present in the Special Collections. I then conducted an item level collection assessment of 1,289 items that were present in the collections. Recording preservation metadata on format, stock brand, duration, etc., I created a spreadsheet that can be used to help prioritize in preservation planning. To accompany this assessment, I wrote a report that gave a history of each of the formats; explained common causes of deterioration typical of each format; and provided recommendations for the care, handling, and storage of these assets. I was able to work with the Special Collections Librarian and outline concrete steps that can be taken for the future care and access to these unique assets.
