M.A. Arts Politics Class of 2024

B.A. Liberal Arts: Activism Through Arts, Media and Storytelling, The New School

Edgie Amisial is a queer Haitian-American interdisciplinary visual artist, writer and filmmaker. Raised in Haiti and based in NYC, she views her creative practice as a bridge between worlds, a way to uphold traditions of storytelling passed down from generations of women and queer folks within the African diaspora. Her work navigates trauma, gender, sexuality and race. Inspired by Haitian and African mythology, intersectional feminism and queer theory, she creates surrealist worlds in which she explores Black queer feminism and eroticism as tools for resistance and liberation. Through her work, she reclaims power and autonomy, subverts harmful stereotypes and confronts racialized and gendered violence. Currently, she is using her research and creative practice to study the roles of erotic justice and collective anger in igniting action against oppressive systems, ideologies and individuals.

The interdisciplinary nature of the program made it the ideal environment for me to grow as an artist and researcher. Theory and activism have always been at the core of my work, and I’m eager to learn from the talented faculty and students from diverse disciplines who are committed to using their creativity to foster social change.
