Framing for Audiences - A Presentation by Jonathan Yi as Part of the "Art in the World" Plenary Series

Wednesday, Nov 30, 2016

On Monday, November 17, Director Jonathan Yi (Tisch '05) presented his film Mad Tiger to Tisch freshmen enrolled in Writing the Essay/Art in the World, a school-wide writing course managed administratively by the Department of Art and Public Policy. Yi was introduced by Tisch Dean Allyson Green.

Modern technology makes it possible to capture everything on camera, and this has had a profound effect on documentary filmmaking. With the abundance of footage at their disposal, documentaries are now, more than ever, shaped in the editing room. Director Jonathan Yi discussed the decisions that shaped Mad Tiger into an 82 minute feature film after capturing hundreds of hours over the course of three years. With multiple storylines, main characters, and storytelling formats to choose from, framing the right story for a specific audience was the way to make something cohesive, simple, and enjoyable to watch.
