Graduate School Benefits for U.S. Military Service Members and Veterans

Post 9/11 GI Bill® /Yellow Ribbon

The Post-9/11 GI Bill® (Chapter 33) is a VA Education benefit designed to support eligible veterans, service members, and their families in covering the cost of higher education. It provides funding toward tuition and fees, a housing allowance, and a stipend for books and supplies.

For students attending private universities like NYU, where tuition often exceeds the GI Bill's annual cap, the Yellow Ribbon Program (YR) helps bridge the gap. This is a voluntary agreement between the university and the VA to share the additional costs. To qualify for Yellow Ribbon at NYU, students must be using their Post-9/11 GI Bill® benefits at the 100% eligibility level.

Montgomery GI Bill®

The Montgomery GI Bill® has two main chapters: Chapter 30 and Chapter 1606.

The Montgomery GI Bill® (Chapter 30 -MGIB-AD) is a VA education benefit available to eligible active-duty service members and veterans. This program provides a fixed monthly payment, directly to the student, for up to 36 months to help cover education and training costs. Students receive monthly stipends based on their enrollment status, which they can use toward tuition, fees, books, supplies, or living expenses.

The Montgomery GI Bill® Selected Reserve (Chapter 1606 - MGIB-SR) is for current members of the US military’s reserve components including the Army, Navy, Air Force, Marine Corps, and Coast Guard Reserves, as well as the Army and Air National Guard. Unlike the Post-9/11 GI Bill®, Chapter 1606 does not pay tuition and fees directly to the school, nor does it include additional benefits like a housing allowance or Yellow Ribbon Program support. Instead, students receive monthly stipends based on their enrollment status, which they can use toward tuition, fees, books, supplies, or living expenses.

Veteran Readiness and Employment/Vocational Rehabilitation
(Chapter 31)

The Veteran Readiness and Employment (VR&E) Program (Chapter 31) is a VA benefit designed to help veterans with service-connected disabilities prepare for, find, and maintain suitable employment. This program offers a comprehensive suite of services that may include covering the full cost of tuition and fees, a monthly housing allowance (similar to the Post-9/11 GI Bill® housing rate), funding for books and supplies, and even support for career counseling and job placement.

Veterans Tuition Award

The New York State Veterans Tuition Award is a financial aid program available to eligible veterans who are legal residents of New York State and enrolled in approved undergraduate, graduate, or vocational programs. This award helps offset the cost of tuition and is applied directly to your student account once NYU receives notification of your eligibility from HESC.

Survivors’ and Dependents’ Educational Assistance (DEA) Program (Chapter 35)

The Survivors’ and Dependents’ Educational Assistance (DEA) program, also known as Chapter 35, provides education benefits to dependents of veterans who are permanently and totally disabled due to a service-connected condition, or who died while on active duty or as a result of a service-connected condition.

The DEA program offers monthly stipends paid directly to the student to help cover education and training costs. The program does not pay tuition and fees directly to NYU, nor does it include Yellow Ribbon Program support. Students may use the funds toward tuition, fees, housing, books, or other related expenses.

Department of Defense Tuition Assistance

As of March 1, 2013, NYU is a participant of the Department of Defense (DoD) Voluntary Education Partnership Memorandum of Understanding (MOU).  

Tuition Assistance (TA) is an educational benefit program offered by the DoD, separate from Veterans Administration (VA) benefits. Under this program, the DoD covers:

• Up to $250 per semester credit hour

• Up to $4,500 per year for eligible students

These rates apply only to students using DoD TA.
