How do we come to know the world and ourselves through photographs? In this artist talk, Lorie Novak will discuss her archive-based art practice. Her photographs, installations, and internet projects use various technologies of representation to explore issues of memory and transmission and shifting meanings of photographs. Novak's collaborative Web project collectedvisions.net (1996-present) exploring how family photographs shape our memory, was one of the earliest interactive storytelling sites. Her ongoing Above the Fold project--an installation with towers consisting of actual front sections of the New York Time--analyses the front page images since 2000, and continues her exploration of the experience of looking at photographs as a disruptive encounter, while examing the politics of archiving and contemporary trends and biases of American media and culture.
