  • Conversation Starters: PS After Hours with Branden Jacobs-Jenkins and Carmelita Tropicana

    We had the honor of hosting a conversation between PS Alum and playwright Branden Jacobs-Jenkins (M.A. '07) and writer and performer Carmelita Tropicana for our Conversation Starters lecture series event. The conversation was moderated by Department Chair Alexandra T. Vazquez and it was a phenomenal experience hearing not only the origin story of their artistry but also their experiences and knowledge on craft, theory, affect, and being. A great follow-up from the PS community outing to see Branden's Broadway debut, Appropriate. It was a privilege watching titans of the field in community with each other at PS!

    A big thank you to all of the amazing student and alumni session facilitators for bringing their multifaceted methodologies, art, and thoughts to PS in nine phenomenal sessions to PRAXIS, INC 2024. We were also joined by PS Alum, Professor Danielle Goldman (M.A. '00, Ph.D. '06) for her keynote address, “The Nerve of a Dancer’s Life,” Professor Goldman attended to the devotion necessitated by daily dance technique classes.

    We had the pleasure of celebrating our current Ph.D. Candidate, and alumni of our BA and MA programs, Sol Cabrini. After a prefatory poetry performance by the dazzling Kamelya Omayma Youssef, Sol wandered through the pages of their book, her lyrics transporting us from the palm of her hands to the underworld of Lower Wacker Drive and back again. It was such a pleasure to share this moment with Sol!
