ITP first year Muqing Wang and her team won 2nd place and the Best Mixed Reality (MR) Design at the 2023 PICO Dev Jam hackathon. They designed an XR application featuring virtual characters, tailored for children enduring prolonged hospitalization, ages 4-12, specifically those battling leukemia. Their mission is to alleviate their physical and emotional distress during long-term medical treatment. Their design goal is to transform negative emotions into positive impacts throughout extended virtual experiences. The gamified approach not only could distract child patients from treatment side effects but also help alleviate pain, reducing the risk of potential mental breakdowns.
