A Comet of a Career: Tisch Drama Alumna Rachel Chavkin

Tisch Drama alumna Rachel Chavkin's directing career is soaring. Creating environmental theatre experiences that immerse audiences in the world of a play, Chavkin has helmed Off Broadway hits like Natasha, Pierre and the Great Comet of 1812, a staging of the classic novel War and Peace. Chavkin's Great Comet was set in a Russian supper club where audidences were served a three-course dinner and shots of vodka. Chavkin and her frequent collaborator, Dave Malloy won an Obie Award for the play.

In a profile in American Theatre magazine, Chavkin disscusses her meteoric career and recalls her time at Tisch Drama, where she was exposed to the avante-garde work of the Wooster Group.
