CHOREOGRAPHER PAT CATTERSON AND MEDIA ARTIST PAUL GALANDO'S NYU INSTALLATION NOW. "ECHOES GLOBAL".

Monday, Feb 1, 2016

On January 30th, and 31st, NOW. an experimental installation performance by director and choreographer Pat Catterson collaborating with NYU faculty / digital media artist Paul Galando connected and projected 9 international dancers and partnered them with 8 NYC dancers at NYU's Tisch School of the Arts (Dance and New Media Program).  The live interactive dance performances were also viewed online in 29 countries (and 19 States in the US) as a live theater audience made up of some of the worlds foremost dance-makers, educators, friends, technologists, and world renowned reviewers attended the installation (and some even danced).

The installation space was designed by NYU's Director of Dance and New Media Paul Galando. Professor Galando mentored and worked with his NYU Tisch Dance and New Media students (and brought in two of his now professional working alums).  Tisch alum artists: Chihiro Shimizu and Dana Katz directed and produced the live stream.  Tisch student artists: Andrea Pugliese, Janae Bonnen, Carly Santori, Rajon Miller, Ernest Baker, Mimi Liu studied, developed, configured, designed, and ran the programs and helped with the configuration, curation, and technologies of the space.  Because the studio spaces at Tisch Dance are shared with current classes and student rehearsals, the setup and breakdown of the sets had to happen much faster than in theatrical houses.  This run and gun style hi-tech setup is a usefull skillset to learn for the working dancermaker and it is taught in Galando's DNM classes.  In all, 5 projectors were used, with 5 computers running 5 instances of Skype.  Other software included, projection mapping, wireless network development, and multi-camera live streaming.

NYU's historic studios have been retrofitted with configurable and moveable technologies that enable digital artists to collaborate with performing artists.  The Tisch Dance and New Media program teaches dancemakers media collaboration, coding, filmmaking, projection and various performance technologies so that they can reach their new global audience.
