48th Street in New York City has long been home to the Tony-award winning Hadestown, directed by Rachel Chavkin '02 (BFA, Drama). The show opened in 2019 to crticial acclaim at the Walter Kerr Theatre, receiving 13 Tony nominations and winning 8 awards, including Best Musical and Best Direction of a Musical.
A new show is slated to open just across the street from Hadestown on April 14th, 2024—Lempicka, also directed by Chavkin.
In honor of 48th Street being home to two productions by the Tony-award winning director, the city of New York has renamed 48th Street “Chavkin Way”. An unveiling ceremony was held on 48th Street in front of the Longacre Theatre, home to Lempicka, on March 20.
