J. Oconer Navarro is an award-winning musical theatre writer, musical director, pianist, arranger, and vocal coach based in NYC. He was MD on the critically acclaimed ADDING MACHINE Off-Broadway (Lortel, Obie, & Outer Critics Circle Awards), THIS ONE GIRL’S STORY, WE THE PEOPLE: AMERICA ROCKS! (Theatreworks USA), WHIDA PERU: RESURRECTION TANGLE (Primary Stages), CAP21, Lincoln Center Theater, NYMF, and more. Regional: BARRIO GRRRL! at the Kennedy Center (Helen Hayes Nomination), Barrington Stage Company, three seasons with the Hangar Theatre, TheatreWorks – Palo Alto, Two River Theater Company, Westport Country Playhouse, & several additional National Tours. Favorite Broadway Music Department credits include THE APPLE TREE, CURTAINS (Assistant to John Kander), THE HOUSE OF BLUE LEAVES (Piano Coach to Ben Stiller), MARY POPPINS, NEXT TO NORMAL, SPELLING BEE, and more. ! As a writer, he has been awarded the American Theatre Wing’s Jonathan Larson Grant, the Margo Lion Award, the Paulette Goddard Award, and his works have been official selections for various festivals in NYC and across the country. Works include AWAKENING (with Joel B. New), BIRTH DAY, ONWARD (with Katie Kring), RECEPTION, and is currently penning several commissions. He has served as a Guest Artist at CAP21, The Juilliard School, Pace University, and the Stella Adler Studio of Acting. He is a proud member of ASCAP, Local 802 AFM, and The Dramatists Guild of America.
