"My grandfather’s home was the first museum I ever visited. Tucked away on the marsh along the southern coast of North Carolina, the white walls inside his small, unsuspecting coastal home are barely visible, hidden behind a collection of impressive works of art. Landscape oil paintings on wood, intricately woven tapestries, and photographs displayed in antique frames are scattered throughout every wall in every room. Every time I went to stay with him, I was most excited to run throughout the house and find what new pieces had been taken out of storage or moved from one room to another. Having access to my grandfather’s unusual collection has built a deep connection to this coastal town and my interest in art. Southport, North Carolina is now a town that is intricately woven into my understanding and perception of art and my experience as an artist.
Through weaving together my own photographs of Southport, I have created three collages to represent the interconnectedness between my art and a physical place. This project is a reverberation of beginnings that link back to my first experience with art and how the influence of a place echoes through my work today."
