"Free Spirits is a collection of photographs of kids interacting with the world that surrounds them. Their actions have always been an intrigue of mine, because they are seemingly so innocent and unbothered by life, death, and taxes of the adult world. “Free spirits” in this mind-numbing, spirit-crushing society we live in, so to speak.
What I came to realise during the past three years photographing them, is that Free Spirits is not necessarily a documentary of the kids, but rather a projection of myself, a moment of clarity and self-reflection for me to consider my own existence. We're so stuck thinking about survival in this society that our childhoods have long become a distant memory, a happier time that never was.
I want Free Spirits to serve as a reminder, of what living in this time has made us become, and where we came from. I want it to make us remember that we were all once, free spirits."
