I’m photographing mother-daughter pairs in this ongoing project. Recently, I’ve realized that I’ve always been fascinated with this relationship. My favorite movies center mother-daughter duos, my family is full of single mothers of daughters, and I’ve experienced my own relationship with my mother mature into one of mutual support as I’ve grown up.
The phrase “the dream is the truth” comes from the first page of Zora Neale Hurston’s Their Eyes Were Watching God. In this passage, she explains that women treat their dreams as reality. Something that is immediate and real, rather than at a distance and unattainable. In my project, the mothers and daughters are each other's dreams and in turn their truth.
