Watching a film allows for people to enter a different reality than the one they are experiencing, introducing a mental world of sound and images that suspend disbelief. Film stills operate within a similar environment, however they bridge the gap between a documented photographic moment and a constructed reality. The stills here show an exploration into different instances of romance that is further intensified by living in urban cities. Photography’s presumed ability to convey realness is challenged in the work, with it lying in an in between space of fact and imagination. It is in this in-between space that I feel that the work can be interpreted the best, providing a sensation of seeing. I hope audiences that look at this work will develop their own reading of the stories that are presented, assuming the role of the director as well as the spectator.
