• WHAT IS THE PROCEDURE TO REQUEST TO TAKE A COURSE/COURSES PASS/FAIL?

Please send an email to tisch.academic.services@nyu.edu and include your name, net ID, NYU ID number, course number(s) and class title(s).

• WHAT IS THE DEADLINE TO SUBMIT THE REQUEST TO TAKE COURSES PASS/FAIL?

Undergraduate and Graduate student deadline: Tuesday, May 12, 2020.

• WILL MY TRANSCRIPT BE NOTED TO REFLECT THE CURRENT HEALTH CRISIS AND, IF SO, IN WHAT MANNER?

The University Registrar will add the following message to your official transcript: In spring 2020, the COVID-19 pandemic required significant changes to University operations and caused significant social disruptions worldwide. As such, Pass/Fail grading policies were broadened and extended where possible.

• CAN I REQUEST TO TAKE MY MAJOR CORE COURSES PASS/FAIL IN SPRING 2020?

Yes. All courses are eligible for the Pass/Fail option in spring 2020.

• HOW DOES A PASS/FAIL GRADE AFFECT MY GPA?

The “P” grade is not calculated in the GPA; the “F*” grade does not impact the GPA.

• IF I FAIL A COURSE, WILL IT IMPACT MY GPA?

Effective April 29, for students who requested to take a class or classes pass/fail and receive an F grade, this will appear as F* which will indicate no credit and no impact on the GPA

• CAN THE PASS/FAIL OPTION BE RETRACTED AFTER SUBMISSION?

No. Once your request is received and processed, it will not be possible to revert to a letter grade.

• WHAT LETTER GRADE IS REQUIRED TO PASS COURSES?

Undergraduate students: “D” or better. Graduate students: “D“ or better.

• IF I FAIL A COURSE, WILL IT IMPACT MY GPA?

Yes. If you receive the grade of “F,” your GPA will be calculated accordingly with the “F” grade.

• CAN I REQUEST TO TAKE A COURSE PASS/FAIL IF IT IS A COURSE I AM REPEATING?

Yes. All courses taken in the spring 2020 semester will be eligible for the Pass/Fail option.

• WILL MY FACULTY KNOW I AM TAKING THE PASS/FAIL OPTION?

No. Faculty will not be able to determine whether students have elected to take courses Pass/Fail.

• WHAT IF I HAVE ALREADY EXCEEDED THE ESTABLISHED PASS/FAIL LIMIT OR WHAT IF I ONLY HAVE ONE PASS/FAIL REMAINING?

Students may elect the Pass/Fail option for the spring 2020 semester regardless of the number of courses previously taken as Pass/Fail.

• HOW WILL I KNOW MY PASS/FAIL WAS APPROVED AND ENTERED INTO THE SYSTEM?

The Tisch Academic Services team will confirm via email and update your record to reflect your request to take course(s) Pass/Fail. There are no visible changes to you on your record but once confirmed, the grading basis will reflect pass/fail rather than a letter grade.

• I HAVE ALREADY SUBMITTED A PASS/FAIL REQUEST WITH MY ACADEMIC DEPARTMENT. SHOULD I RESUBMIT MY REQUEST USING THIS NEW PROCESS?

Please consult with your academic advisor. If your advisor has submitted the request to tisch.academic.services@nyu.edu, there is no need to submit a second request.

• IF I AM CURRENTLY ON PROBATION, CAN I REQUEST  PASS/FAIL A COURSE?

Students on academic probation can elect to take courses pass/fail during the current semester.  Students who do not meet the School’s minimum academic standards this semester will have their probation extended through the fall semester.

• CAN I REQUEST A PASS/FAIL GRADE IN A COURSE IN WHICH I HAVE AN INCOMPLETE?

The temporary Pass/Fail option is available to students who are in the process of completing their course work as long as the final product is submitted prior to the end of the spring 2020 semester. Please review deadlines above.

• WILL THIS AFFECT MY ELIGIBILITY FOR SCHOLARSHIPS AND FINANCIAL AID?

Grades of "Pass" will not have an effect on financial aid.  Grades of "Fail" will affect satisfactory academic progress and financial aid eligibility.

• IF I REQUEST A PASS/FAIL GRADE FOR A COURSE THAT COUNTS TOWARD MY SECOND MAJOR OR MINOR, WILL IT FULFILL THE REQUIREMENTS?

All courses taken in Tisch as a Pass/Fail will satisfy your Tisch major, second major, and minor requirements.

If, however, you are pursuing a second major or minor outside of Tisch, please check with that department about a Pass/Fail grade fulfilling the second major and minor requirements.

• HOW WILL THIS AFFECT MY ACADEMIC REVIEW FOR LATIN HONORS?

Latin honors will be mostly unchanged. It is based on the GPA distribution determined by the previous class year's graduating class and determined by the cumulative GPA at the end of the Spring 2020 semester.
