Today we met the characters of Commedia Dell’Arte!
Pantalone is a greedy old man from Venice! Arlecchino is devilish and naive. Brighella is Arlecchino's friend. Il Capitano talks a big game, but jumps at the sight of a mouse. Tartaglia stutters. Zannis is bird-like, with a long nose, and Pulcinella is a little bit drunk all the time. With hilarious demonstrations by Jacob, each character came to life.
Then, Joan told us to choose a mask that we wanted to make. A few of us were slightly worried because we felt that we were not very “crafty.” Nonetheless, we headed to the art studio and began to bring our characters to life. Our masks began to form by reshaping the clay and "learning to look, better”, as Jim says, at all the different curves and details of the mask.
After dinner, we all headed off to the Limonaia where we had class with, the brilliant, André. In his class, we used the text from our Scapin monologues and recreated specific childhood memories to bring that text to life.
