Coming to America as an international student, since my freshman year people have been telling me “Why don’t you just marry an American, that way you can stay in the country after you graduate.” My future in this country has always been uncertain, I applied for the green card lotto every year and didn’t get it, any job application I fill out I have to check the box that says I will require visa sponsorship and that typically is what causes me to not hear back. Casal Americano explores the marriages of Brazilians who married Americans. Whether they married for papers or fell in love along the way, I got to know the story of how each of these people met and understood the cultural differences of another, any habits they picked up along the way or culture shocks. As an immigrant who aspires to remain in the country, there is a big chance I one day will end up in their shoes and this is a way to answer any questions I have about what my future as a Brazilain, and hopefully one day, an American Citizen.
