“Functionally Dysfunctional” is how I always describe the city. On the one hand, everything is overpriced, garbage lines the streets, and no mode of transportation makes it easier. Yet despite this dysfunction, the city never stops moving day to day. New Yorkers adapt on the fly by either ignoring the dysfunction or planning and working around it. This project focuses on a specific element of the dysfunction: commuting, and more specifically, the subway system. While it is the easiest and cheapest way to get around (except for walking, of course), it doesn’t come without its faults: delays, filthy seats, and skipped stations are all issues that plague the subway system. This recreation of the subway interior represents the dysfunction that New Yorkers experience; all its elements come together to show people not from here the chaos that those living in New York will experience and how they plan and work around this. This installation aims to remove some of the dysfunction from people's lives, giving them a space to rest and enjoy themselves without the dysfunction that the subway brings.
