Breaking the Mold explores the transmutation of the human form in photography through artistic interventions on the surface of the print. In these images, the viewer isn’t looking at individual people, but the blurred form of a human body. With this lack of specificity comes a tacit understanding of a more generalized idea of the sitter as a “stand in”, representing any person or group of people. The figures have patterns and abstractions imposed upon them through various media inherent to the print itself. A photograph mounted to glass is later shattered, highlighting the fragility of a once solid state as it relates to both the material and human behavior. At a time when unease and uncertainty are often palpable facets of everyday life, Breaking the Mold invites viewers to reconsider the mutable nature of identity and the delicate balance between form and fragmentation, ultimately challenging preconceptions and prompting reflections on the evolving essence of human existence.
