In 2016 I began working with hip-hop artists in my hometown of Madison, Wisconsin, and have been collaborating to create images that convey both their individuality and aura as creators. Many who are viewed publicly as culturally commodified figures are who I consider friends, mentors, collaborators, and business partners; a side of these individuals that mainstream hip-hop outlets neglect to document. We work on sporadic schedules, finding ourselves often hours or even days into sessions creating images and audio with little to no rest. This spontaneity is core to creative processes across the industry. With large majorities of content in the industry painting artists through a monotonous lens, this project’s perspective repositions this focus on the individual’s presence and vibrancy. Hip-Hop’s creators have immense influence in our popular culture, and these images organically aim to capture these creators’ artistic presence as complementary to their identity and existence.
