"I Stood There For Some Infinite Time. I Did Weep, But That Is Nothing In Comparison"
This project is a meditation on what it means to live in, as James Baldwin so aptly put it in his essay “A Letter to my Nephew”, the teeth of the most terrifying odds. It was born, in earnest and yet unknowingly, during a sojourn abroad where, having spent much of my life on the edge, I finally slipped. I spent those 5 months abroad with my head underwater and I’ve been treading water and gasping for air ever since.
The problems of the past are never past but are ever-present. Their tendrils, seen or unseen, felt or unfelt, creep into every aspect of life.
My hope for this project is that it can help others as it has helped me; that it can function as an archive, (a talisman?), a syllabus, a mirror, a vessel, a synthesizer, a counterweight, a wake-up call, a voice of reassurance, a window or a doorway or, perhaps best, a portal.
