Ian Gray Performance Studies

I'm a former labor lobbyist, art market analyst, and creative consultant. During the pandemic, I began to migrate from a decade industry towards academia and most recently worked as a Research Associate at Harvard Business School. My research interests lie in understanding the relationship between identity and the ways in which it structures consumer goods and commercial markets.

In addition to attending grad school, I invest and produce theater both on Broadway and in my home town of Chicago. I also run an independent art consultancy that works with collectors and galleries to help structure long term fine art investment strategies. I'm here at NYU to finish my journey from Industry towards getting my PhD in Organizational Behavior and Economic Sociology.

If I'm not engaged somewhere in my work or in classes you can find me working on my car, building LEGOS, giving lectures with CARAS on ethics and appropriation in the Leather and BDSM community, or joshing around at your friendly neighborhood Furry Convention.

Why PS @ NYU?

The nadir of cognition and perception is the anthropomorphizing in everything around us; it shapes all parts of the world we live in. If we see "humanness" in the world, then we see identity. If identity is performed, then to understand human cognition, we must understand identity performance.
