Lin Que Ayoung

“ON YOUR RADAR” IS A WEEKLY GRAD FILM NEWS SEGMENT THAT FEATURES A STUDENT PICKED AT RANDOM.

LIN QUE AYOUNG IS CURRENTLY A 2ND YEAR STUDENT AT GRAD FILM.  WE ASKED Her A FEW QUESTIONS AND HERE’S WHAT sHE HAD TO SAY:

Where do you consider home and what is it like there?

I'm a native New Yorker... born and raised in Queens. I love the Realness here. I need it to survive. It informs me of where I stand. I can visit all over the planet, but there is no place like HOME. Even if I moved, New York culture resides deep inside me. It's where my creativity lives.

What or who is inspiring you right now and why?

After taking a course that explored genre theory with a focus on horror, I become intrigued by humanity's fascination with fear and the role it plays in our lives. Consequently, I'm inspired by films that embrace both the beauty and horrors of life. I appreciate visionaries such as Alfred Hitchcock, Stanley Kubrick, Jane Campion, Park Chan-wook, Julian Jarrold, Barry Jenkins, David Fincher, Ava DuVernay, Kathryn Bigelow... There's way too many...

What has been your most rewarding experience at NYU Tisch Grad Film so far?

In the process of creating films with the support of my peers and teachers, I am finding my own voice. Although I'm captivated by writing and directing, I'm discovering that I'm also interested in cinematography. While in undergrad, I was intimidated by the technical mastery involved in cinematography. Through Tisch, the process has somehow been demystified allowing me to hone in on another creative element of filmmaking. Overall, I believe this newfound appreciation will help me become a better filmmaker.
